How to play Word Scramble online

In Word Scramble everyone sees the same jumbled word at the same moment and races to type the answer. It's simultaneous, so nobody waits for a turn, and a room of eight moves as fast as a room of two.

Create a room, share the code or the link, and players join from their own phones with a nickname. The host presses start, and eight words later there's a ranked results screen.

It's a good one to run on a video call or in a group chat, because rounds are short and it's easy to jump in mid-session.

Word Scramble rules in full

  • Each round runs 45 seconds.
  • Scoring is by finish order: first correct answer gets 3 points, second gets 2, everyone after that gets 1. Wrong or missing answers score nothing.
  • A round ends when the timer runs out or when every connected player has answered, whichever comes first.
  • There are eight words per session. Highest total wins, and ties share the place.
  • Words are single everyday words drawn from around twenty categories, such as animals, food, sports and countries.

Tips for winning at Word Scramble

  • Look for common letter pairs first, like TH, CH, SH and ST. Lock a pair together and the rest of the word gets smaller.
  • Sort the letters into vowels and consonants, then try dropping the vowels between the consonants one at a time.
  • A slightly slower right answer beats a fast wrong one, because you can't earn points for a word you didn't get.
  • The words are plain everyday ones, so think common before clever.
