How to play multiplayer Hangman online

This version of Hangman is co-operative. The room shares one hidden word and one pool of guesses, so you're working together to solve it before six wrong guesses run out, not racing each other.

Create a room, share the code, and everyone joins from their own phone. Players take turns calling one letter each, and a correct letter fills in everywhere it appears. The host sets the round up and deals a fresh word for the next round without anyone leaving the room.

Playing on your own? Start a room by yourself and you guess too, with computer players available to fill the table.

Hangman rules in full

  • Each round shows the category, such as animals, food, sports, countries or vehicles, which narrows the field. There are around twenty categories in all.
  • No word repeats within a session, so a long game night won't recycle the same answers.
  • Each turn is one letter. A wrong letter adds one strike for the whole room, then the turn moves on.
  • Six wrong guesses ends the round and the word is revealed. Reveal every letter first and you win.
  • The word never reaches players who shouldn't see it, so nobody can peek at it in their browser.

Tips for winning at Hangman

  • Open with the common vowels, E and A, then move to R, S, T and N.
  • Use the word length and the category together. A five-letter animal is a much smaller list than a five-letter anything.
  • Talk it through. Since it's shared, the best guess is the one the group agrees on, not the first one typed.
  • Save unusual letters like Q, Z and X until the word's shape rules the common ones out.
